Broadcast<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Forgiven - Part 3\n Luke 18:10-12\n 08\/19\/2026\n\n\n 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a\n Pharisee and the other a tax collector.\n 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:\n ``God, I thank you that I am not like other men,\n extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like\n this tax collector.\n 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I\n get.'' (ESV)\n\n This we our prayer acknowledges God's grace even as we\n confess our unworthiness.\n Almighty and everlasting God, always more ready to hear\n than we to pray and to give more than we either desire\n or deserve, pour down upon us the abundance of Your\n mercy, forgiving those things of which our conscience\n is afraid and giving us those good things that we are\n not worthy to ask, except through the merits and\n mediation of Christ, our Lord.\n\n\n ``Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee\n and the other a tax collector.'' As people looked on, they saw a\n man who was highly regarded as a religious leader hurrying into\n the Temple at the time of the sacrifice. They also were\n disgusted at the other man, someone who worked for the Roman\n government, one who made his living at the expense of others.\n\n The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ``God,\n I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners,\n unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I\n fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.''\n\n\n This is a prayer, for prayer is talking to God. But this\n prayer neither asks God for a blessing, nor is it a prayer which\n confesses a sin. The Pharisee exalts himself above others,\n claiming religious superiority. In the eyes of society, he is\n correct. No one can match his civil goodness, his meticulous\n keeping of the law.\n\n His prayer is one of pride and arrogance, born out of\n experience. He was, after all, one to whom others respected as a\n pillar of the community. Did his prayer please God? Did his\n good works earn him the assurance of eternal life? May our Lord\n grant us humility, that we may be willing to serve Him by serving\n our neighbors.
