The Great ``O'' Antiphons\n Luke 1:78-79\n 12\/21\/2025\n\n\n 78 Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby\n the sunrise shall visit us from on high\n 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in\n the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the\n way of peace. (ESV)\n\n The great ``O'' Antiphon for the twenty-first of December\n comes from the Song of Zechariah, found in the first chapter of\n Luke:\n Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the\n sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to\n those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,\n to guide our feet into the way of peace.\n\n\n O Dayspring, splendor of light ever- |\n lasting:*\n Come and enlighten those in darkness and\n in the shad- | ow of death.\n\n\n This antiphon, which reflects also the prophet Isaiah, ``The\n people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who\n dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined,''[1]\n applies to Jesus' second coming. The wording of the antiphon\n reflects the older King James translation which uses the term\n ``Dayspring'' in place of ``sunrise'' in the Benedictus. This\n specialized Messianic title says that the rising of the morning\n light overcomes the darkness of night.\n\n We pray, therefore, that Jesus, the Light that no darkness\n can overcome, return quickly to redeem this world from the gloom\n of sin and death.\n\n May our Lord grant us the light of faith which holds firmly\n to God's rich promises of grace and mercy.
