(ESV)\n\n Jesus, while entering the city of Nain in Galilee, met a\n funeral procession which was carrying a young man for burial.\n This man was the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.\n\n We can imagine the procession, the large crowd from the\n city, the mourners crying and lamenting, the widow dumbfounded\n and overwhelmed with the grief of losing both her husband and\n son. The separation of death causes pain no matter the\n circumstances.\n\n ``And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and\n said to her, `Do not weep.''' Often we hear the trite promises\n and assurances, ``do not weep for everything will work out.''\n Yet we have nothing concrete to offer the bereaved except empty\n phrases meant to console.\n\n When Jesus says, ``Do not weep,'' He gives reason for hope.\n Our Lord Jesus Christ took upon Himself our sin and the guilt of\n our transgression. When He assures us that God is in control,\n that we have the hope and promise of eternal life, those words\n are filled with the truth.\n\n Jesus said, ``Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be\n comforted.''[1] Saint Paul wrote: ``But we do not want you to be\n uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may\n not grieve as others do who have no hope.''[2] We weep, we mourn,\n but do so knowing that our Lord has given His life for the\n redemption of those we love.\n\n May our Lord grant us hope even in times of distress for the\n sake of His Son. Amen.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n ____________________\n\n 1.
