Broadcast<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Repaying Evil -- Part 3\n Genesis 50:16-18\n 06\/26\/2024\n\n\n 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, ``Your\n father gave this command before he died,\n 17 ``Say to Joseph, `Please forgive the transgression\n of your brothers and their sin, because they did\n evil to you.' And now, please forgive the\n transgression of the servants of the God of your\n father.''' Joseph wept when they spoke to him.\n 18 His brothers also came and fell down before him\n and said, ``Behold, we are your servants.'' (ESV)\n\n Jacob, the father of Joseph and his brothers, was dead.\n Because of the sin the brothers committed against Joseph, they\n feared retribution, that Joseph would take revenge.\n So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, ``Your father\n gave this command before he died, ``Say to Joseph,\n `Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and\n their sin, because they did evil to you.' And now,\n please forgive the transgression of the servants of the\n God of your father.''' Joseph wept when they spoke to\n him. His brothers also came and fell down before him\n and said, ``Behold, we are your servants.''\n\n\n Why did Joseph weep? Was it because of his disappointment\n that his brothers did not trust him to act with forgiveness after\n their father had died, that he was indeed capable of rendering\n evil for evil? Was he disappointed that the love he had shown in\n providing for his father and brothers during the famine was not\n evidence of his concern? Or were these tears of joy, that in\n confessing their sin against him, Joseph could fully declare the\n forgiveness of their sin?\n\n Joseph's brothers now offered to Joseph the respect that he\n had foretold, the very thing that had originally caused his\n brothers to betray him and sell him into slavery. The brothers\n expected punishment, they hoped that it would not be severe.\n What they received was mercy.\n\n May our Lord grant us the trust to confess our sins, and the\n certain hope that our sins are forgiven for the sake of Jesus\n Christ.
