                      The Tower of Babel - Part 3\n                            Genesis 11:5-7\n                              05\/22\/2024\n\n\n        5    And the LORD came down to see the city and the\n             tower, which the children of man had built.\n        6    And the LORD said, ``Behold, they are one people,\n             and they have all one language, and this is only\n             the beginning of what they will do. And nothing\n             that they propose to do will now be impossible for\n             them.\n        7    Come, let us go down and there confuse their\n             language, so that they may not understand one\n             another's speech.''  (ESV)\n\n        The descendants of Noah were instructed by God to leave the\n   site where the ark had landed, to travel, and to fill the earth.\n   Instead, they traveled eastward until reaching the plains in\n   modern day Iraq between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.  There\n   they decided to build a large city with a tower in defiance of\n   God's desire that they go and care for all the earth.  The ruins\n   of this city, later called Babylon, are still evident in the\n   desert.\n\n        God had other plans.\n        And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower,\n        which the children of man had built.  And the LORD\n        said, ``Behold, they are one people, and they have all\n        one language, and this is only the beginning of what\n        they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will\n        now be impossible for them.  Come, let us go down and\n        there confuse their language, so that they may not\n        understand one another's speech.''\n\n\n        Just a century earlier, in response to rampant sin, God had\n   destroyed all but eight people by causing a world-wide flood.\n   Later He would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone\n   for their great sins.  Yet, in love and mercy, God determined not\n   to destroy those who rejected Him, but to cause circumstances so\n   that His will would be done.\n\n        Our Lord showed the same compassion three millenia later\n   when He sent His Son to bear the sins of the world rather than\n   destroying all who opposed Him.  He does not desire the death of\n   the wicked, but that they repent of their sinful ways and return\n   to Him.\n\n        May our Lord grant us the grace to see His love, to receive\n   His mercy, and to set aside our selfish desires so to do His\n   will.
