The Christian writers of the first three centuries make it plain that\n from the beginning the candidates for Baptism were required to confess \ntheir faith. This same confession of faith was also used as the starting\n point for Christian instruction, and as a touchstone for descerning \nfalse doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First and second century writers, such as Clement, Ignatius, Polycarp,
\nand Irenaeus mentioned the earliest form of this creed.
\nBy 500 the creed was quoted in its present form by Caesarius of Arles
\nin France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the\n Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was\n crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He \nrose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the \nright hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to \njudge the quick and the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
